Eagle takes its name from an 1836 sighting: three early settlers reported a bald eagle circling over a mound on the prairie. By 1880, the village ranked as the third most commercially important community in Waukesha County, with its own dry goods, hardware and clothing stores, a grain elevator and a butcher shop, built up around the railroad that arrived in 1851. Mineral-springs resorts like Eagle Springs and Paradise Springs made the area a tourist draw long before the state began acquiring land for the Kettle Moraine State Forest in the 1950s and 60s. Old World Wisconsin, the large outdoor living-history museum, opened within that forest in 1976 and still draws visitors to the area today.

The Village of Eagle sits inside the larger Town of Eagle, and a number of buildings in and around the village date to the 1800s, several listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Newer homes have filled in since, and the village reached 2,071 residents by 2020, up from 1,950 in 2010. Older homes near the historic core often carry ductwork that was added well after the house was built, while the newer construction around the edges of the village is usually on its original builder-grade equipment.
