How a dual-fuel system works
A dual-fuel system pairs an outdoor heat pump with a gas furnace. In summer the heat pump is your air conditioner. In spring, fall and much of the winter it heats the house by moving heat in from outdoors, which takes less energy than burning gas when the weather is mild. When it gets cold enough that the furnace is the cheaper or stronger choice, the controls switch over and the furnace carries the load.
- The heat pump takes the place of the outdoor AC unit, with an indoor coil on the furnace that is matched to it
- Your furnace stays as the second heat source, so you are never relying on one machine in January
- A dual-fuel thermostat or control decides which one runs, based on the outdoor temperature
- Same ductwork and registers, and no indoor units on the walls
Is a heat pump worth it in a Milwaukee winter?
It depends on the house and your utility rates, and we will tell you honestly. Cold-climate heat pumps are built to keep heating efficiently at 5°F, and many still produce useful heat well below zero, but every heat pump loses capacity as it gets colder. That is why the dual-fuel setup suits so many Milwaukee homes: the heat pump works the mild and moderate days, and the furnace takes the deep cold.
Before you decide, we work out the switchover point for your house, the outdoor temperature where the furnace becomes the cheaper heat, using your actual electric and gas rates and the heat pump’s rated performance. Then we put a yearly operating-cost comparison on paper next to the price.
When it makes sense, and when it doesn’t
- A good fit: your air conditioner is due for replacement anyway, the furnace has years left, and the ductwork moves enough air
- A good fit: you want to burn less gas without giving up gas heat on the coldest nights
- Think twice: undersized ductwork or a full electrical panel may need work first; we check static pressure and the panel before we quote
- Think twice: if the furnace is near the end too, we price a full replacement next to the dual-fuel option so you can compare
How we install it
- A load calculation for your house, not a guess from the old label
- Static pressure and airflow measured on your existing ductwork
- Heat pump, matched indoor coil and dual-fuel controls installed and started up to the manufacturer’s procedure
- The switchover point set for your rates and explained, so you know what the system is doing and why
- Permit pulled whenever the work requires one, and the inspection scheduled

Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Can I add a heat pump to my existing furnace?
Usually, yes. Most gas furnaces can be paired with a heat pump in place of the air conditioner, with a matched indoor coil and a dual-fuel thermostat or control. We check the furnace, its blower and the ductwork first and tell you if anything needs to change.
At what temperature does it switch to the furnace?
It depends on your house and your rates. We calculate the switchover point from your electric and gas prices and the heat pump’s rated performance, set it, and show you how to adjust it.
Will a heat pump keep my house warm below zero?
A cold-climate heat pump keeps producing heat below zero, just less of it. In a dual-fuel system you don’t have to find out where its limit is: the furnace takes over in the deep cold.
Does a heat pump make noise in winter?
Outdoors it sounds about like a modern air conditioner. On cold, damp days it also runs short defrost cycles, which can make a whooshing sound and a little steam by the outdoor unit. That is normal.
Do I need new ductwork?
Not usually. Heat pumps need good airflow, so we measure static pressure on your existing ducts. If a return is undersized we tell you, and fixing it improves comfort with any system.
Are there rebates or discounts for a heat pump?
Focus on Energy offers instant discounts on heat pumps that meet its efficiency tiers: participating distributors pay them and the contractor passes them through, so the discount comes off the invoice. Income-qualified households may also qualify for the state’s IRA Home Energy Rebates, which mostly require an IRA Registered Contractor. The federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025.
How much does a heat pump cost in Milwaukee?
A whole-house cold-climate heat pump system runs $7,500 to $14,500 installed in the Milwaukee area, according to 2026 Milwaukee figures from HVAC Project Cost, a cost-estimate website. A dual-fuel setup keeps your furnace, so there is less equipment to buy. Those are area averages, not our quotes; you get a written price after a free estimate. Sources are in our Milwaukee HVAC price guide.
Are your repairs guaranteed?
Yes. Every repair is guaranteed for one year, parts and labor. If something we fixed fails within that year, call us and we make it right at no charge.
